I enjoyed this movie a lot more than I care to admit, and way more than I remember. The first half of this movie is really good, with excellent character development and a very dynamic situation. The second half is a lot of fun, and it looks like the cast was having fun, too, but I could only enjoy it in parts, because as soon as they arrived at Vulcan, reason went out the window. Nothing makes sense, from being able to see Vulcan's demise from where Spock was stranded, the fact that he didn't go to the Starfleet outpost immediately, young Spock's outburst and his acceptance of Kirk as captain when he should have been, and a lot more. This is a different timeline, but I don't get the feeling from The Wrath of Khan that Kirk was so smug when taking the Kobyoshi Maru test as he reprogrammed it, and I was hoping for something a little more ingenious. I guess this Kirk is different enough.

Still fun, but too many things didn't really make sense. It remained enjoyable, but I don't think it has the charm of the original. It is more like any other movie made for today's audiences: fast on action and pacing, never letting up to allow the audience to think, and short on actual common sense.

As expected, this rating went up on a second viewing, mostly because I could evaluate it knowing what was to come. I quite enjoyed the movie, especially the way it moved forward so quickly, and gave the characters a chance to develop. The story had just as many flaws as the first time I saw it, but they seemed to be less important.

Unfortunately, I have to reserve comment until I see the repercussions of this. It is a bold move, and I hope it wasn't just for the sake of boldness. If they follow it up, it will make the movie great. If they don't, there was really no point. I have to see the movie again, as I kept expecitng the inevitable reset button, after Pike was captured, Vulcan destroyed, and so on, but it never came. The characters were perfectly acted, and this is definitely the most visually intense and beautiful Trek movie. I only wish the director didn't have so many close-close up shots. Scotty was hilarious! Kirk was too much of a bad boy for me, but his character has changed, after his father died. And Spock is in love with Uhura!
