I've seen three different versions of the Dune opening, and they all do a great job at it, focusing on different aspects. This one, as would be expected, has by far the best special effects, though downplays the Spacing Guild and their need for spice. The attack on Arakeen was great, as was Paul's survival in the desert, and his fight with Janus (incredible actor, that one). The worm was the best I've ever seen it. The best thing about part 1 is that it keeps its focus on Paul, and how he has to grow up suddenly. |

Wow -visually spectacular, and the actors nailed the strong performances. It's a good thing the movie has a strong base story, though, because the directory almost relied too much on the visuals and the long bass sounds through every minute. |

Very good, but longer than I recall. I enjoyed the seriousness of the story, but found for a movie they could have increased the pace a little -it brought me back to old-school storytelling, at a much more relaxed pace. For that, it was enjoyable. |

Although this movie is longer than the previous one, it hits all the same notes. It has different settings, but because it follows the book very closely, there isn't much room to maneuver. The sets are huge and awe-inspiring, and the political landscape is laid out clearly here, where the enemy is engaged in a great battle. But it seems that the story is only just beginning when it ends. |
